For myself and many others in the world, cancer is a scary thing. No less than 7.9 million people died of cancer in 2007 alone, and specialists say that forty percent of cancer is preventable. There are obvious factors such as smoking, being obese, poor diet etc, but there are many other dangers you may not be aware of. I will discuss three of them.

One of the simplest ways of avoiding cancer is to filter your tap water. Although you wouldn't think that you could possible get cancer from simply drinking your tap water, commonly found carcinogens in your water include chromium, arsenic, and other chemical byproducts that are found after water has been disinfected. Although they are found in small amounts, unless your body is running at optimum efficiency these chemicals can build up in your body and cause problems. A reverse osmosis filter will help if your water is contaminated with arsenic or chromium. You'll never be able to drink regular tap water again! After analyzing almost 20 million records obtained from state water officials, 315 pollutants were found in the tap water Americans drink. What is even more disturbing is that more than half the chemicals found are not subject to health or safety regulations. Honestly, it's just better to filter your water for peace of mind for you and your children.

Check out your outdoor play sets and wooden decks. The ones that were built before 2004 are more than likely coated with a pesticide that has arsenic in it. This chemical concoction can stick to the hands and clothing of you and your children. Make sure to wash your hands and the hands of your children after playing on decks or playgrounds, and consider replacing certain high traffic zones with non-arsenic alternatives. Keep your pets and your children away from the soil underneath the deck and playground as the chemicals can run off when it rain and pollute the area underneath. Be especially careful of splinters from these sets as they can be particularly dangerous. Try not to use commercial cleaners on your deck, as these can convert the chemicals to an even more toxic form.

Lastly, try to use less stain and grease proofing chemicals. Teflon and Scotchgard can be found in stain repellents on couches and carpets, as well as in greaseproof containers for fast food and packaged foods. Say no to optional stain treatments in your home, and stay away from greasy packaged foods. Not only will these chemicals stay in your body for many years, they are persistent in the environment and pollute the water we drink. Stay away from paper plates, don't eat microwaveable popcorn as the bags are polluted, and avoid non stick pans in your kitchen.

By following these simple steps, you can lower your risk of cancer considerably. Take one day at a time, and start noticing what you can do every day to be healthier. Always make sure to eat a well balanced diet, get enough sleep, and realize that four out of every ten Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, and two out of ten will die from it. Take charge and reduce your risk!
